About the Item
Jaipur Lake Pavilion is a serigraph on paper measuring 24 x 27 inches, signed 'McKnight' lower right and annotated lower left. Framed in a contemporary, black frame. Numbered XXX/CC from the edition of 510 (there were also 60 AP, 200 Arabic, and 50 HC).
Dating back to 1727, Jaipur is a city divided into seven sectors with a palace lying at its heart. Aiming at architectural perfection, the Maharajah Jai Singh arranged the city’s spacious streets at right angles and proportioned them so that they would all be at prescribed widths. From the balcony of the dazzling garden room the artist presents in his artwork, McKnight invites us to see this city exactly as the Maharajah planned with the neatly slotted temples and mosques sitting between shops and houses.
Through this serigraph, the splendor of the interior design – and its scalloped archways, brilliant royal purple walls, carved niches and cane back chairs – tells us that we are inside a stunningly beautiful Asian pavilion. McKnight’s vision is so striking that we can imagine ourselves seated among the richly patterned throw pillows and enjoying the inviting fruit platter that dominates the table’s center.

Thomas McKnight
Thomas McKnight's imaginary images can be described as delightful visions. No matter the passage of fashion or the seasons, there are places of transcendent timelessness in his work where peace and beauty only exists. Besides the incredible beauty of this work, it is probably his creation of places that gives us a sense of home that is responsible for his rapport with such a large public audience.

Biography:
Thomas McKnight (born 1941) is a U.S. artist. He was born in 1941 in Lawrence, Kansas. He attended Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut, where he was one of only five art majors. He spent his junior year in Paris. After a year of graduate work in art history at Columbia University, in 1964 McKnight found a job at Time Magazine where he would work for eight years, interrupted by a two-year stint in the U. S. Army in South Korea. In 1972 McKnight left Time, summered on the Greek island of Mykonos, and commenced painting in earnest. In 1979 in Mykonos, McKnight met Renate, a vacationing Austrian student, and married the following year. Throughout the 1980s McKnight’s art, mainly limited edition serigraph prints, became increasingly popular. In 1994 he was commissioned by the White House to paint the first of three images for President Clinton...
