About the Item

In this illustrated WWII-era poster, a wide-eyed pilot is ejected midair from his cockpit, his face frozen in panic as he realizes what he’s done. His arms remain suspended in position, as though still grasping the control stick he left behind in the cockpit. Behind him, the aircraft speeds on without its pilot, while a bright red safety belt flaps uselessly from the open plane — a sharp visual metaphor for a simple precaution ignored. Above the chaos, Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini watch from a cartoon cloud, not just laughing, but clearly glad — their expressions beaming with satisfaction at yet another Allied misstep. Part of the U.S. military’s wartime safety campaign, this image is one of the 16 posters issued by the Directorate of Air Traffic and Safety and the Directorate of Safety Education. The series used cartoonish exaggeration and gallows humor to emphasize how seemingly minor safety lapses could serve the enemy’s cause. In this case, the message is literal and urgent: buckle up or risk becoming the punchline of a deadly mistake. The graphic style is deliberately clean and bold, designed to grab attention in bustling airfields and flight schools. The placement of Axis leaders as cheering spectators turns every slip-up into a propaganda loss. It was a clever psychological tactic — teaching safety through national pride and shame. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster was printed on heavyweight paper and is in excellent condition apart from slight toning at folds. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
