About the Item

We're thrust into the heart of an intense soccer (or football, if you will) match in this exciting 1963 poster that was printed in Spain. A goalie swats away a ball headed right for the goal, as his team mate cheers him on. This poster is shown before a banner of text would have been added; likely promoting the team's next match or a season schedule. This poster is a bit of a mystery with regards to the teams being depicted. While many may attribute the blue and white jerseys to the national kit for Argentina, they did not play the Spanish national team in 1962 or 1963. It is much more likely that it is a La Liga game being shown here, or perhaps even a match from the Inter Cities Fairs Cup of 1962 or 1963; both years were won by the club team, Valencia. The victorious team's kits match those of Valencia, and this is the location that the poster was printed in so it appears to be a good, while not confirmed, hunch. The Inter Cities Fairs Cup was a precursor to the FIFA World Cup, featuring club teams rather than national teams in competition with one another. It is one of two images in a series. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Original 'Soccer' vintage lithograph posters a.k.a. "Heads Up", Spain
Located in Spokane, WA
Original Soccer vintage sports poster. Linen backed in very good condition, ready to frame. Printed by Ortega Company in Valencia. This type of untitled vintage poster was commonly printed and the date of an upcoming game and team would be added at the bottom of the poster. Soccer games were played quite often, allowing the local team to advertise their events without reprinting a new poster for each game or event. This poster was printed as a full lithograph, so it was expensive to produce. There is no specific designation of which two teams are being shown here in this antique poster The poster has a nickname of ‘heads-up,” as two of the players are in the air as they position themselves to control the soccer ball. Valencia two main clubs, FC València and Levante UD, attract hordes of fans to their matches. Both clubs play in the First Division of La Liga...

Shot on Goal, Sporting Scene
By John Dobbs
Located in Surfside, FL
John Barnes Dobbs, a determinedly figurative painter who launched his career in the 1950s against the prevailing winds of Abstract Expressionism, lived to see a time when Realism would coexist with Abstraction, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and a variety of other artistic movements. On August 9 Dobbs died at his home in New York’s Greenwich Village at the age of 80. In his final works, Dobbs’ figures appear against flat backgrounds, iconic as the images on tarot cards: acrobats, boxers and contortionists, struggling against the physics of their own bodies and that of the universe. Dobbs had many solo shows at galleries, universities and museums. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, and the Salon Populiste in Paris. Dobbs’ paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC; the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ; the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; the Canton Museum of Art, Canton, OH and the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, MA. From 1972 to 1996, he was a Professor of Art at John Jay College, City University of New York. He was a member of the National Academy, to which he was elected in 1976. Born in 1931 in a small house by the Lackawanna Railroad...
