About the Item
This playful pop art-inspired large indoor sculpture is by Calgary’s Alexander Caldwell. Stainless steel balls in various sizes are welded to create a square frame of ‘clouds’--each ball coated in glossy bright white. Caldwell meticulously adds layers of industrial paint to draw attention to the minimalist form and ensure the finish is flawless. The Canadian artist is garnering an international reputation for his superb contemporary sculptures that often re-imagine shapes found in geometry or science.
The base is part of the sculpture.
“Whether seeming to levitate against a wall or hover off a plinth, Caldwell’s sculptures become a skillful play on visual surprise and pleasure.” Winsor Gallery
Alexander Caldwell was born in Whitehorse, Yukon. He studied with Artist Katie Ohe at Alberta College of Art (now called The Alberta University of the Arts) graduating in 1985. He established Alexander Caldwell Design Ltd, in a warehouse that he converted into a studio and foundry. His work has been exhibited in Calgary, Miami, Chicago, Scotland, and Switzerland. It is widely collected in both private and private collections throughout Canada and internationally including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Disney Tokyo, the W Hotel Korea, and Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts. Caldwell lives and works in Calgary.

Born 1961 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Caldwell lives and works as an artist full time in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Alexander Caldwell’s sculptures are immaculate in execution and finish. Caldwell embraces curves and right angles, round volumes, and flat planes, where minimalism meets pop art. Squares, spheres, hemispheres and cylinders are the building blocks of his art. Each sculpture is painted a single bright colour or coated with a meticulous metal finish. Caldwell works mostly with found materials, although he will cast elements he wants to repeat. He employs colour to remove the shape as far as possible from its origins as a functional object. The colour that transforms the industrial origins of his materials has become so important to the minimal shapes that it’s “as if the metal has become an armature for the paint." Caldwell’s artworks are held in private and public collections in Canada, USA, Greece, and Korea.

View AllIce Nebula 3 - polished, geometric, abstract, painted steel sculpture
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This polished, geometric, abstract, painted steel sculpture is by artist Alexander Caldwell. Caldwell’s modern minimalist sculptures have been recognized for their masterful execution and flawless form and color. The Calgary-based artist’s work is often influenced by both nature and science. Ice Nebula is one of a series of pieces inspired by the extraordinary images of space sent to Earth by the Hubble Space Telescope.
This tabletop sculpture consists of several stainless steel spheres of different sizes welded together to form a tower-like shape, mounted on a wooden base. Caldwell’s signature paint finish—layers of glossy paint mask the seams of each component so they appear cohesive. The distinctive iridescent paint of Nebula changes color from blue-green to light purple in different light conditions. A nebula is a cloud of gas or dust in outer space.
“… The color that transforms the industrial origins of my materials has become so important to the simpler shapes of my new work that it’s as if the metal has become an armature for the paint. “ Alexander Caldwell

Cumulus VI Revisited - figurative, contemporary, stainless steel sculpture
By Ania Biczysko
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This contemporary outdoor sculpture is forged from stainless steel to resemble clouds.
In this elegant sculpture by Ania Biczysko, fine ribbons of stainless steel overlap in circles forming a cloud-like structure mounted on a tripod stand. When viewed from all sides, the sky is reflected in the luminescent quality of the highly polished steel.
"Clouds for me represent reaching out for hopes and dreams. They appear in ever-changing shapes and light however elusive and untouchable, we find them present in our everyday lives. Like our dreams, they guide us to something bigger and allude to an idea of pure beauty." Ania Biczysko
Ania Biczysko obtained a master’s degree in sculpture from the Fine Art Academy in Gdansk, Poland. Over the years, she has received many public exhibitions and commissions within...

Wendy Letven's brilliantly colored abstract wall sculptures and freestanding pieces of painted aluminum are an exciting addition to genres which the artist has extraordinarily reinvigorated with forms that are playful, elegant, sophisticated and unique. Extending approximately 4 - 8 inches from the wall, reflected shadows can also be a marvelous aspect of Letven's works. Occasional and subtle scientific references ( molecules, atoms, astronomy, physics) add gravitas and intellectual weight to works that are pure visual delights - humorous, quite complex and intricate, wildly colorful (or more subdued in black, white and/or silver). Natural is equally influential. Working in sizes as small as 10" high to 10' long, there is an enormous range of possibilities with Letven's sculptures as pedestal and shelf pieces, freestanding works, and very large commissions adaptable to both walls and huge spaces for interior and/or exterior sites:
