About the Item

Carved during Allen’s early years, this intimate grey marble sculpture has the quiet gravity of something discovered rather than made. Allen has always favored materials with their own inner weather, and here the marble shows soft drifting veils of grey punctuated by a dramatic crystalline seam that rises like a geological spine. The form rests somewhere between a polished river stone and a small celestial body, its subtle concave top inviting touch. The surface carries the faint natural striations that Allen often embraces, traces that recall his years sculpting in the desert near Joshua Tree. These marks become a record of the stone’s formation and the artist’s intervention, a partnership that gives the work its calm but undeniable presence. Size: 6 inches tall by 8 inches diameter Weight: 21.5 pounds Provenance: Estate of Patricia A. Bell, New Jersey; (Acquired from the above) Private collection, NJ Literature: G. Adamson and D. Fogle, Alma Allen, New York, 2020, pp. 50-51 (for related examples) Condition: Overall good condition. With minor fissures throughout inherent in the material. With scattered surface scratches and minor scuffing, particularly to the underside. A minor chip along an outer edge of the top, approximately 1⁄8 x 1⁄8 in. The mid-body with a few minor losses and associated areas of infill (largest approx. ¼ x ¼ in.). Presents well, ready for display.
