About the Item

The word in Tibetan for lotus is “Pema.” In Buddhism the lotus is a symbol of purity. The lotus is planted and rooted in the mud, but grows up through the water and into the vast sky without any stain just as our mind is capable of transcending the murkiness and darkness of our suffering. Andra Samelson decided to make this lotus out of CD’s since one day, as the sun came in her window at a particular angle, it landed on a CD lying on her table and a rainbow was reflected onto her wall. The petals of Pemarom, in its original scale, are created with more than thirteen hundred CDs whose ephemeral rainbow reflections of light change as the viewer moves around the artwork. The light creates an illusion of a three dimensional space, emphasizing the illusionary quality of all phenomena. In Tibetan Buddhism, the term “Rainbow Body” refers to the realization of a great Master. It is not uncommon that at the death or cremation of a highly evolved realized practitioner, a multitude of rainbows appear in the sky, sometimes different sizes and shapes. This has been witnessed again and again. In general a rainbow appears when certain elements such as moisture and light come together in a particular way, but the Rainbow Body does not depend on any outer elements but can manifest unimpeded in different places at once. Rainbow Body is without shadow; it is awareness without obscurations; it is omniscience; a rediscovery of the pure space what has always been primordially present. Andra Samelson is a multi-media artist whose work explores the relationship of microcosm and macrocosm, the celestial and terrestrial. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Samelson currently lives and works in both New York City and Delhi, NY. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College and is a recipient of fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Corporation of Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Samelson’s work has been exhibited extensively in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe and her public artwork, commissioned by New Jersey Transit, is permanently on view at the Hudson Bergen Light Rail’s Second Street Station in Hoboken, NJ. She has been a visiting artist at the University of Virginia and the ceramics factory Ditta Grazia Majoliche Artistiche in Deruta, Italy and she has given talks about her work at NYU, Pratt Art Institute, PBS and Artists Talk on Art. Her work has been reproduced and reviewed in the New York Times, Art Forum, New York Arts, New American Painting and elsewhere, and is represented in several private and public collections including the Rubin Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow Jones, and the Loyola University Museum of Art. Most recently the 9/11 Memorial Museum acquired two of her large scale paintings for their permanent collection. Andra Samelson's "Pemarom" is available in an edition of 5, the first of which was acquired by Loyola University Museum of Art in Chicago.

Nancy Baker, Fewer Answers, 2017, paper, acrylic, digital pigment print
By Nancy Baker
Located in Darien, CT
In Baker’s work, there is solace in the geometry of fundamentals, and a practice that focuses on the ephemeral nature of paper and the ease of its transportability, which allows her to create large-scale constructions. A desire for definitive certainties and incontrovertible truths in an era of “alternative facts”, precipitate the need for Baker to assert her clarification of evidence. A new major installation has been created for her exhibition at ODETTA that layers baroque design elements found in paper cup carrying trays with anxiety-provoking phrases, rendered as gorgeous, yet fragile paper spheres...
