Ann Mallory
Casing #43

$2,500

About

Inspired in part by mysterious stone slabs that were found near high water marks after the devastating 2011 tsunami in Japan, Ann Mallory’s sculptures have a spiritual energy. These slabs, obscured by decades of jungle growth, were carved with ancient warnings not to build on lower ground. Likewise, Ann Mallory’s Memory Stones serve as talismans, witnesses and reminders to learn from our mistakes and keep our lives on ‘higher ground’. The forms appear to be borrowed from both nature and civilization as organic indicators of important spaces, whether these are the cairns found worldwide, the tsunami stones from Japan or the linga and yoni found at many Hindu sites in India. The concepts from afar that inspire the Memory Stone series are countered with a personal significance stemming from home- watching loved ones fade from dementia. There is a common desire to remember and preserve all the memories of lost friends or family and Mallory’s sculptures are an effort to do that. Just as they can indicate a sacred space, they can also be markers for special relationships or thoughts. A highly skilled and accomplished ceramist, Mallory graduated from Stanford University with further training at the Parson’s School of Design and has received numerous art awards. Her interest in both Eastern and Western traditions come together seamlessly in her wheel-thrown vessels. Her works have shown in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Santa Barbara Museum of Fine Art, Santa Barbara, CA.
