About the Item

Untitled, 2016, 10.25 x 16.25 x 1.25 inches (base), mixed media and metal, $900 James Charles’ minimal and monochromatic work has a boldness that intrigues. Subtleties such as texture and a nonchalant roughhewn character combine to inform the viewer of each works history. Taking things a step further, the artist challenges the conventional by adding coiled rusted wire, news print or at times reconstructing the physical parameters of his work. These components reside both separately and intrinsically unified within the same plane, simultaneously representing personal and universal narratives. “I begin by building up a monochromatic surface. Layers of paper, paint and gesso with marble dust on panel. News print is used to create a visual texture without thought to content. These text and photographic components are used for their form or linear quality, independent of any possible apparent understanding of them. Just as color is used minimally and as a point of emphasis, they are part of the forms used to construct the composition. An arrangement of shapes, color and texture which gets meaning from itself and not its parts”.

    By Hyunmee Lee

The gestural paintings of Hyunmee Lee are sumptuously minimal. Rich forms advance from buttery canvases like an abstract garden. Gauzy veils of paint hover like soft air against the ebony weight of matter. Light peeks through translucent shapes like sunlight illuminating soft mist. Texture swirls and echoes across the canvas as if carved by waves or eroded by the wind. The viewer, invited into a realm of contemplation and meditation, is surprised to look away and see the physical world existing in only three dimensions. But perhaps that is precisely the experience the artist would like the viewer to have. In her current exhibition, Touch, on display at the Phillips Gallery...

Outcrop, acrylic on paper, 22 x 15 inches (framed size: 26 x 18.5 inches), $670 Josanne Glass paintings focus on color, texture and surface quality, resulting in work that is simultaneously minimalist and organic, creating a tension between restraint and abandon. Objects, if any, and ground are treated equally. The abstract paintings begin on paper or canvas with a textured base. From there, simple lines or shapes are added, and quite often followed by actions (carving, sanding) that create unplanned patterns or textures that will ultimately define the painting. Dynamic and whimsical, Aron Hill’s mobile is a joyful contemporary kinetic sculpture. Three separate discs are covered in a curated collage of shapes and brilliant colours. The colour profile here is Hill’s characteristically vivid palette-- orange, yellow, blue, red, and green punctuated by black and white. Delicately balanced, the sculpture moves in the air redefining the space and affording the viewer a fresh ‘view’. Mobiles have existed for millennia—at first as windchimes, then re-imagined by Russian sculptors...
