About the Item

"Three Hulls IV" by Aurelio Torres Contemporary sculpture made from reclaimed lumber and concrete Aurelio Torres is a classically trained painter who distills the aesthetic laws of Antiquity –of proportion dictated by the Golden Section—while he brings to his work, in both two and three dimensions, the legacy of the Taller Torres-Garcia. His three-dimensional works, assemblages of carved, distressed, angular pieces of wood, are primarily inspired by a painting by his father, Horacio Torres, and reflect memories marked by figures of boats: his childhood home in Montevideo overlooking the traffic of vessels in the mouth of the port; the family’s voyage to the United States on a cargo ship carrying coffee and stopping at various ports in Brazil, reaching Miami, and finally arriving in New York City; and the time spent living and studying in Barcelona, Spain, another significant port city. The essential form of a boat’s hull and the basic geometry of the sails are the elements that Torres uses to compose these sculptures that have a haunting, poetic beauty and subtle harmony in the union of simple shapes. Torres has exhibited in Buenos Aires and New York, and his artwork is in numerous private collections in South America, Europe, and the United States. He lives and works in East Hampton, New York.
