About the Item

A San Francisco Bay Area steel sculptor who has been sculpting for over 30 years. In 1989, Benbow received the Royal Ueno Museum Purchase Award, during the 6th Annual Henry Moore Exhibition, for They Laughed at Columbus. The fol-lowing year East is East a steel sculpture inspired by visits to Buddhist and Shinto shrines near Kyoto, was also purchased for the permanent collection. The Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles, gave him a solo exhibition at Westweek92 which attracted 30,000 designers to see new trends in design. After the show, Warner Brothers rented all 7 pieces for the filming of the English version of Le Femme Nikita. Travels have taken him to the Chateau du Pourtales, a 70 acre sculpture park in Strasbourg, which includes his aluminum sculpture Xanadu in the Schiller University collection. Painted steel piece Rainmaker won 2nd prize at the 5th Annual Festival des Arts, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France in an interna-tional competition with 150 participating sculptors in 1994. It is permanently installed in a downtown Riviera park over-looking the Mediterranean. In the summer of 1995 he traveled to Lithuania for the dedication of Upper Quadrant on display at Europas Parkasnear Vilnius. (pictured top of home page) Rene di Rosa's Napa/di Rosa/Preserve" includes Benbow's aluminum geometric sculptures Terra Incognita and A Rock-ets' Red Glare in addition to his painted steel triptych, Hyperboreans. His painted steel triptych Pillars of Hercules is in the permanent collection on display at Grounds for Sculpture (Johnson Atelier) Fairgrounds Drive, Hamilton, NJ .

Gryphon
By Damon Hyldreth
Located in Napa, CA
The sculptures of Damon Hyldreth appear both static and fluid, rigid and flexible, strong and smooth, effectively blurring the line between nature and structure. By crafting organic forms from an obviously man-made metal, Hyldreth creates a unique symbiosis between nature and structure, unifying the sculpture and the surroundings through the free-flowing energy and architecture of his artworks. Keeping in mind the intimate connection between artists and their tools, Hyldreth studies the potential energies of his metals and coaxes out exquisite forms and natural power. Using mainly stainless steel, as well as the occasional bronze and Cor-ten steel, Hyldreth allows his materials to dictate their final shape and become an ultimate collaboration between man and matter. The evocative forms subliminally draw the audience in, giving every viewer a deeply personal experience. In 2004 Damon received his BFA in Sculpture from San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA. Public and private installations of Hyldreth’s work include the town of Palm Desert, CA, the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong, The W Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, Trump Hollywood, Hollywood, FL Neiman Marcus, Houston, TX, Soffitel Hotel, Los Angeles, CA and the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza...
