Ben McLeod (b. 1948, Aberdeen, Scotland) is a preeminent Canadian sculptor whose over five-decade practice is characterized by a profoundly self-propelled trajectory and the cultivation of a unique, potent visual language. Born in Scotland and raised in Vancouver, McLeod’s artistic path began in the 1970s, evolving into a masterful engagement with industrial materials. McLeod’s work relentlessly interrogates themes of resilience, the relentless passage of time, and the dynamic interplay between structure and movement. He transforms heavy-duty industrial and farming components, primarily steel sourced from Alberta scrap yards, into commanding brutalist sculptures. His aesthetic embraces raw honesty—jagged edges, rich oxidized surfaces—yet is always imbued with a profound sense of harmony. These abstract forms often evoke figures or machinery through the viewer’s perception of balance, and are engineered for comprehensive 360-degree viewing, dynamically shifting from every vantage point.
