Bill Greaves
Large Outdoor Vessel No 1 - glazed, outdoor, ceramic, snake and vessel sculpture

2023

About the Item

A decade ago, Bill Greaves took his niece to participate in a clay class at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. He was entranced and soon afterwards began his own artistic journey. Today, the former architect designs vessels hand formed from clay that are coiled, scraped and carved. This highly textured rounded piece is rendered in a soft, golden colour accentuated by a deep blue interior visible through the concave opening at the top. ‘Haptic,’ means sense of touch; an appropriate reference to the tactile nature of his work. There is a coiled clay snake in the bottom of the vessel. A drainage hole allows for water to pass through. “Everything is informed by the free form of hand building—the exact opposite from architecture where you make every decision in advance.” Bill Greaves Originally trained as an architect at Yale University, Bill studied ceramics at Alex Yeung Studio in Toronto from 2017-2019 before setting up his studio near Consecon, Ontario, in 2020.
