About the Item

Artist Commentary: This chaise, originally covered in lime green cotton upholstery, sat in my studio for months, acting as a daybed for my miniature poodle. Finally after several attempts at sketching my desired result, I began. I undid the exterior skin to reveal the internal construction, an assemblage of soft and hard materials. I learned how to tuft, to transform the structure into struggling human forms of bulbous shapes emerging from its original purpose to provide comfort. Deeply black shiny spandex stretched over amorphous forms produce unnatural distorted protrusions. Stretching, pulling, impaling the object, it is transformed into a new hybrid of comfort and discomfort, simultaneously falling apart and exuding strength. Precarious and awkwardly constructed it elicits messages of hope and hopelessness. Keywords: softsculpture, abstract, figurative Artist Biography: Bobbi Meier is a Chicago-based visual artist working in various mediums, including; sculpture, collage, drawing, and photography. Her work is realized through provocative use of materials, such as pantyhose, spandex, porcelain, and found home furnishings; embedding themes of emotional history, struggle and loss in its making. Ms. Meier was recently awarded the prestigious John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Residency, Kohler WI, where she transformed her soft sculptural forms into a new body of work made from industrial porcelain. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Kohler Foundation and The John Michael Kohler Arts Center. She earned her MAAE and MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Watson," the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Oct 2021 - Mar 2022. "Most of my works are supported by memories of the past and suggested realities. Issues of social politics, ancestral references, and astral projections are presented with fragmented elements of 'real life' collaged and collapsed, as dreams are prone to do. If connections are made, all the better. I feel that life should remind us of our dreams." - Richard J. Watson Richard J. Watson is an icon in the Philadelphia art world. Much of his work relates to his experiences as a Black African American man. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1968), has taught at his alma mater, and has served in the Exhibitions Department at the African American Museum in Philadelphia since the 1980s. He has been exhibiting his work for decades, and has an extensive bibliography.
