Brother Mel Meyer (American, 1928 - 2013) was a Marianist artist and educator whose prolific output of nearly ten thousand works made him a beloved figure in Midwestern modernism. Born in Florissant, Missouri, he joined the Marianist order at age nineteen and later earned degrees from the University of Dayton and the University of Notre Dame. Guided by the Marianist belief in engaging the broader community through education and the arts, he traveled extensively through Europe to study stained glass and modern religious art before establishing his studio on the campus of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis. There he lived, taught and created for more than four decades. Brother Mel became known for his joyful use of color across media that included metal sculpture, acrylic, watercolor, fresco, and handmade paper, all reflecting his lighthearted spirit and disciplined daily practice. His work appears in civic spaces, schools and private collections throughout the region.

Creating an estimated 10,000 artworks, Brother Mel Meyer gained national notoriety during his 45-year career. Born in Florissant, MO in 1928, Brother Mel joined the Marianist order of monks at age 19. As a teaching order, the Marianist believe in engaging with their community and encourage the study of arts and literature. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton, Brother Mel taught religion and social studies in San Antonio. In 1960, he earned his master's in art from the University of Notre Dame. With the encouragement of his order, Brother Mel spent a year traveling and studying art throughout Europe. In 1969, he opened his art studio and gallery on the campus of St. John Vianney High School campus in St. Louis, MO, where he lived and worked until he passed away in 2013. Brother Mel is best known for his colorful works across various media, including metal sculpture, watercolor, acrylic, frescoes, and handmade paper and textiles. Many who knew him say his work reflects his lighthearted, jovial spirit.
