About the Item

Brother Mel Meyer (American, 1928 - 2013) was a member of the Society of Mary and artist educator whose prolific output of nearly ten thousand works made him a beloved figure in Midwestern modernism. Born in Florissant, Missouri, he joined the Marianist order at age nineteen and later earned degrees from the University of Dayton and the University of Notre Dame. Guided by the Marianist belief in engaging the broader community through education and the arts, he traveled extensively through Europe to study stained glass and modern religious art before establishing his studio on the campus of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis. There he lived, taught and created for more than four decades. Brother Mel became known for his joyful use of color across media that included metal sculpture, acrylic, watercolor, fresco, and handmade paper, all reflecting his lighthearted spirit and disciplined daily practice. His work appears in civic spaces, schools and private collections throughout the region.
