About the Item
Throughout his career, sculptor Bruce Beasley has worked with various sculptural media, ranging from cast aluminum to Lucite to bronze to wood. As one of his more recent pieces, this bronze is inspired by experiments in virtual reality.
The lyrical, undulating organic forms of this work from the Aeolis Series originated from investigations into the possible applications of virtual reality. Representing the artist's quest for freedom and movement of shape, this sculpture was created via an inventive process of translating VR technology into a natural tool for intuitive mark-making. Beasley used 3D computer imaging to produce, study and manipulate volumetric gestures without the interference of gravity. Bruce Beasley then built one of the largest known 3D printers to extrude this model in polyurethane, after which it was enlarged in bronze to create an elegant museum-scaled piece.
Bruce Beasley has been at the forefront of the field of sculptural 3D printing since the mid-2000s, and is well-known today as a leading practitioner and developer of virtual reality in the creation of his sculptures. Nevertheless, as a dyed in the wool fine artist, Bruce Beasley considers technology to be nothing more than an additional tool to achieve fine art; and fine art is the poetic product of its use.
