About the Item
César Baldaccini (1921–1998), one of the most important French sculptors of the 20th century, is internationally recognized for his radical and iconic Compressions. This 1970 Compression exemplifies César’s groundbreaking approach: found industrial metal pieces densely compacted into sculptural form, transforming discarded material into an artwork of striking presence and raw beauty. Each Compression is unique, capturing both the violence and poetry of modern industrial society. Created during the artist’s most celebrated period, this work highlights César’s pioneering role within the Nouveau Réalisme movement, alongside Arman, Yves Klein, and Jean Tinguely. An essential piece for collectors of postwar and contemporary art, it is documented in the artist’s archives of Denyse Durand-Ruel and represents a rare opportunity to acquire a historical sculpture by César.

César Baldaccini
César Baldaccini was born to immigrant Italian parents in Marseille and his life span was from 1921–98. He was considered to be one of the most important French artists and sculptors of the 20th century. Much of his work involved the compression of junk material and automobile material. He became associated with the 1960s Paris based Nouveau réalisme movement. Most importantly, Baldaccini just had a major retrospective at the Pompidou Center in Paris. His work is very collectible and desirable.

His parents, Omer and Leila Baldaccini, Italian of Tuscan origin, had a bar in Marseilles, where César was born in 1921 in the popular district of la Belle-de-Mai, at No. 71 rue Loubon, in the center. “I am basically an absolute autodidact,” he says. He first worked at his father’s, before attending in 1935 the courses of the School of Fine Arts in his hometown with his classmate Raymond Normand and, in 1943, the National School of Fine Arts in Paris with Michel Guino, Albert Féraud, Daniel David and Philippe Hiquily, like him in the studio of Marcel Gimond...
