About the Item

'Calendar Wheel' is an original assemblage by the American artist Charles Berg. Within a divided drawer, Berg has assembled a variety of found objects: metal balls, a clock, a sheet of copper punched with the word 'wind,' a Victorian card of a woman, etc. The artwork takes its name, however, from a transparent 1935 calendar in the lower right. Berg here is following the tradition other artists who specialize in assemblage, including Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauchenberg, and Betye Saar, all artists who were working in the post-war era and whose work is celebrated today. Can be displayed on a flat surface or hung on a wall Objects protected behind a sheet of Plexiglas Overall good condition; intentionally fabricated from objects with signs of age and distress; crack in Plexiglas lower left Not signed

By Elizabeth Austin

"Spin" is a mixed media miniature encased in a wooden box. The box opens and closes like a triptych. The paintings within are mostly abstract with references to nature in its green and yellow colors and shapes. 9 1/4" x 10 1/2" x 1 1/4" Elizabeth Austin paints enchanted landscapes on the reverse side of thick plastic panels. Her recent paintings, The Nocturnes, are set at night in a leafy forest. Richly colored in blues and greens, they include reflective pigment and collaged foil...

'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' original assemblage by Joel Jaecks
By Joel Jaecks
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' is a rare early example of the small-scale assemblages that American artist Joel Jaeks began producing in the 1980s. As with all of his assemblages, the artwork is constructed inside an envelope-sized paper board box – then filled with what can only be called memories, ideas and fading dreams. 'Scratch The Earth, Let The Telephone Ring' is covered on the exterior and interior by splatters of blue and red paint, applied with the same vigor as the Abstract Expressionist canvases of Jackson Pollock. On the back, four squares cut from a screenprint of a winter landscape form a window to the themes on the inside: pasted on the back, a Victorian postcard...
