About the Item

This dynamic table sized sculpture is created from sheets of steel and rods, welded together in an abstract geometric pattern. While the work adheres to a rigid, rational geometry, this sculptures suggest lyrical movement, apparent weightlessness and improvisation as the title suggests. Chris Hill Free Flow welded steel, acrylic paint 21.5h x 11w x 5d in 43.18h x 20.32w x 12.70d cm CHI020 Chris Hill is a Santa Fe based sculptor. Chris was born in Port Arthur, Texas but grew up in small town North Mississippi. He began welding at age 18 at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Yellow Creek Nuclear Plant’s apprentice program. The nuclear plant project was cancelled but it was there that his passion for metalworking began. It would be another 8 years before he resumed his work in metal after studying design and graduating from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Working as a designer and teaching digital design at the American Academy of Art, Chris managed to find time to resume his work in metal and began exhibiting his sculptures in 1990. He has since exhibited in SOFA Chicago, LA Art Show, New York & Miami, Art Chicago, Art Palm Beach, Art of the 20th Century: New York and Expo Chicago. His work is held in public and private collections worldwide.

"Untitled" Sidney Gordin, Abstract Metal Steel Sculpture
By Sidney Gordin
Located in New York, NY
Sidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...
