About the Item
Fabric artist Chung-Im King’s series of felt tapestries called “Mutation” consist of striking geometrical shapes that mimic designs found in nature. The artist has cut pure white felt fabric into irregular rectangles that are sewn back together with precise stitches into an organic grid.

Whether the source comes from nature, historical context or plainly created by me, working with patterns always gives me the thrill of entering a new world. Chung-Im Kim has received accolades and exhibitions for her work from prestigious institutions such as the Boston Museum of Art, the invitational Bojagi Exhibition at the Suwon Park Museum in Korea, the Museum Nagele in the Netherlands, and the Belgian Triennial Contemporary Textile Arts Exposition. Kim's exquisite design and execution have been honoured with top prizes and awards in many international art competitions. One of her works was selected as a gift from Canada to the president of China. She received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984 and has taught at OCAD University in Toronto since 2006.

Chung-Im Kim
Chung-Im Kim was born in Seoul, Korea and received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984. She began her career working in the textile industry as a surface pattern designer while also teaching and running a studio in Seoul before moving to Canada in 1990. Since her arrival, Kim has been a resident in the Textile Studio at Harbourfront Centre and a freelance designer in the design industry before becoming an associate professor in the Fibre Dept at OCAD University in Toronto. Kim places equal emphasis on both her teaching and artistic career. Her role as an educator has expanded toward institutional collaborations challenging her students to work in a variety of public settings. At the same time she has also maintained an active studio practice with exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, U.S.; Bogojae Gallery in Seoul, Korea; and a solo exhibition at David Kaye Gallery in Toronto.
