C.T. Whitehouse
Warped Platter, 17” diameter Bronze

2010

About the Item

Warped Platter by CT Whitehouse 17" diameter, bronze edition of 21 decorative abstract minimalist vessel (Not suitable for food) ABOUT THE ARTIST: Minimal use of finishing techniques allows a closer connection to the casting process which generates tremendous energy not too different from the energy that created Earth and Life. As you hold one his forms, feel the timeless beauty and power of bronze. "I began my work in bronze by exploring the vessel – the most basic form being the bowl. Ultimately and symbolically, the circle represents life itself. Its ancient, yet contemporary purpose is plainly utilitarian. Using bronze as my medium, I have been able to express the beauty and nature of the metal. Using simple vessel forms I can direct the viewer to appreciate the feel of bronze, enjoy the patina and experience the warmth of a polished rim or a surface rendered to gold-like qualities. The boat, or canoe, was the next evolution of the vessel – my first being a narrowed bowl. Now elongated, this vessel evokes a different utility. Movement. By design, it is meant to move. While a bowl holds food, water, and various goods of life, the boat now carries us and transports our goods from one place to another. The boat means exploration and requires risk. The act of movement means getting into the boat and setting a direction, passing over uncertain water with hope of reaching a destination – maybe one unintended." "The intent of my work with bronze is simply to express the nature and beauty of the material itself. From the original designs in wax, Use of simple forms frees the viewer to see the qualities of bronze without concern for subject or detail. These bronze forms are contemporary creations; and yet they hold primitive connotations."

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia
