David Chamberlain
Senza Misura - smooth, polished, abstract, contemporary, mahogany sculpture

1981

About the Item

The graceful curves of this contemporary solid mahogany sculpture by David Chamberlain appear to emulate the image of a heart. Hand carved from one piece of this rare wood; the abstract form is one continuous loop. The naturally rich grain is highly finished with a soft lustre that accentuates the form. Chamberlain’s sculptures are designed to rotate so that the form and character changes with every turn. A talented musician, composer and singer, Chamberlain’s artwork is inspired by the freeform language of jazz music. Each sculpture bears a musical name. Senza Misura is an Italian musical term that means to play ‘without a beat' or 'without measure.’ For Chamberlain, that term also relates to the ideal of romantic love—loving without measure as represented by this beautiful form. “I’m influenced by relationships and patterns in things I both see and hear.” David Chamberlain David Allen Chamberlain was born in Canton, Ohio in 1949. He attended Princeton University in 1971 where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. In 1977 he acquired a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. That was followed by a graduate certificate from the Teaching Studio Art Institute of Colorado College and finally a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Colorado. Over several decades, he has created more than 2000 pieces of artwork in various mediums which appear in both private collections and in art institutions, museums, and colleges around the world. This sculpture can be upscaled for the outdoors. Available on a commission basis in various sizes and in a variety of materials including bronze and steel. Please contact the gallery for pricing, material selection and sizing details. Allow 10 to 12 weeks for production.

  • Fanfare - smooth, polished, abstract, contemporary, mahogany carved sculpture
    By David Chamberlain
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
The elegant, lyrical curves of this abstract sculpture by David Chamberlain are hand-carved from one continuous loop of mahogany wood. The American artist is a sculptor, painter, jazz musician, a Capella singer, composer, writer and educator—a ‘renaissance man’ whose artwork is often inspired by music. Chamberlain works with the visible grain and polishes the wood to a soft lustre to accentuate its dynamic form. Each sculpture is designed to rotate on a pedestal so that with every turn another view of the form is revealed. This is the last of a suite of eight sculptures; each anthropomorphic form designed to be reminiscent of the traditional busts...
