limited edition of 8 powder coated aluminum
This sculpture is a self-portrait of my state of mind when I am working on fixing things from inside myself. As I am thinking and praying for a better life for me and my family. In 1997, I was hit head-on by a drunk driver, it affected my back and my health a great deal. I had to make many visits to the doctor to focus on getting back to my regular self. This artwork reflects this time and the symbols inside the piece are about gathering your own strength from within.
Melanie Yazzie is a professor of art and head of the printmaking department at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She exhibits her artwork and lectures internationally. Yazzie has taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts, College of Santa Fe, University of Arizona, and Pont Aven, France.

Melanie Yazzie
Melanie Yazzie is an American sculptor, painter and printmaker, born in 1966, in Ganado, Arizona. She first studied art at the Westtown School in Pennsylvania. She has received a BA degree in studio art with a minor in Spanish from Arizona State University, in 1990 and an MFA degree in printmaking from the University of Colorado, at Boulder, in 1993.
