About the Item
David Patchen creates vivid and luminous glass works using the time-honored techniques of cane and murrine glass blowing, originally discovered in the glass blowing studios of Venice. Patchen studied in the Public Glass studio in San Francisco under Afro Celotto.
Patchen sees glass as both a thoughtful, creative process, and an exacting technical challenge. He focuses on color and pattern and works to infuse as much detail as he can into the delicate and complex medium of glass. Each detail is purposeful and planned well in advance of the work's creation. Color is just as integral to these works as pattern, and Patchen is ever-conscious of using complimentary and contrasting colors to give the viewer a striking visual experience. His graceful forms are his own diverse and multi-layered three dimensional canvases, which draw on inspiration from textiles, ethnically distinct colors, and the marine environment. Series by Patchen include Bloom, Foglio, Resistenza, Parabola, Sphere, Piscine, Allegro, and a variety of panels and other creative forms.
Patchen has exhibited his works in collections across the US, including the SOFA show in Chicago, IL; the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA; and ART Palm Beach in Palm Beach, CA. He received a Juror’s Choice Award in ArtSpan San Francisco and is an Artist in Residence in Seto, Japan. He also exhibits internationally in shows and collections including ART Shanghai, as well as in galleries in Vienna, Austria, Calgary, Canada, Dusseldorf, Germany, and the Netherlands. Patchen’s expertise has been collected into a book housed in the permanent collection of the Giorgio Cini Foundation's Centro Studi del Vetro (Glass Study Center) library in Venice and the Rakaw Library at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Eye of Discovery, a Blue & Black Abstract Glass Artwork by Yorgos Papadopoulos
By Yorgos Papadopoulos
Located in London, GB
‘Eye of Discovery’ is a unique sculpture by the Cypriot artist, Yorgos Papadopoulos, created from glass, silicone and pigments with a hematite patinated steel bezel and stand.
Papadopoulos has reworked the iconic 'Evil Eye' amulet with his Stratified Jewels Collection. Taking this simple composition as a starting point, the scale is blown up and the colours completely reworked using resins and glass pigments.
Using a pioneering technique he developed at the Royal College of Art. Yorgos combines pigments and shattered sheets of Industrial glass which he then re-laminates them to create architectural-scale artworks that look fragile but are extremely durable.
Yorgos Papadopoulos initially studied as an interior designer at Middlesex University changing to a Ceramics Diploma at the City Lit in London. Whilst studying for his MA in ceramics at the RCA, Papadopoulos became drawn to the glass studios and after an incident where a sheet of Industrial glass was broken, he became seduced by the Material’s contradictory qualities. Excited by what is normally viewed as a bad outcome in the glass Community he spent the rest of his MA experimenting with and breaking glass.
‘Glass is my canvas, hammers are my brushes,’ says Papadopoulos. His ability to exploit and harness accident has informed his entire working practice. His architectural panels create a stunning focus in cool modern spaces, the contrast between the unpredictable movement of fracture and the clean lines of contemporary architecture excite the eye.
Papadopoulos’ work is represented in private collections globally and public collections including; Eskishihir Glass Museum, Eskishihir (Turkey), Derix Glass Studio Taunusstein (Germany) and British Airways Art Collection - Heathrow T4 (UK). He is the author of the A&C Black book Glass Lamination...
