About the Item
'Pura Gede' is a contemporary abstract cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from his Internal Space & Standing Stones series. It features painterly brushstroke formations in glass called trails. These trails of orange, black, blue, and purple are created through rolling molten glass into various forms and shapes. They are then placed within clear glass and fused into one large piece through kiln casting. This technique creates a layered, suspended, and vibrant three-dimensional painting with an interior space.
The inspiration for Pura Gede came from David's travels in Europe while teaching at Sars-Poteries. Seeing the ancient monoliths scattered throughout Europe he wanted to create a glass representation of what he saw in the Standing Stones Series.
"There was a kind of implacable quality or a confrontation that was like a conversation with the stones that I have tried to incorporate into my sculpture. These pieces, on their elaborate stainless steel bases, are designed to last millennia and speak to humans in the distant future."
About the Internal Space Series:
David’s experiments with sheet glass and fusing led him to try to make the glass thicker to see more interior space. It was during this time a professor pointed out that he was working with a metaphor, for which the internal space of the glass was the equivalent to the internal life of the mind. This became his operating mantra but also forced him to come to terms with the casting of thick sections.
“Creating those internal spaces came with some problems. Other than telescope mirrors, I did not know that anyone annealed glass in a kiln for more than a day or two. When pieces cracked after five days of cooling, I could not believe they would need even more time. The tragedy quotient was huge for this type of technical exploration, and that is well before any exploration of internal space as poetry.”
Each piece from this series is unique and explores a different facet of the world around us and how it pertains to the internal space within.
About David Ruth
David Ruth is an Oakland, California based glass sculptor that has been making large-scale cast glass sculptures and architectural features for over 30 years. Often featuring bright colors and contrasting polished surfaces with rough textures, the work has been featured in architecture, museums, and in galleries around the world. He holds degrees in History from University of California at Santa Cruz and glass from California College of the Arts. Over the years he has taught various workshops and classes in glass techniques and is considered an innovator in glass casting.
