About the Item

'Malaita 3' is a contemporary cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from the Chill Project Series. The series is one of David's first explorations in casting natural forms in natural glass. This particular form was an ivy burl. Its is made from of lead crystal glass which creates the grey textured color. The contrasting textures and color with create a multidimensional piece that changes throughout the day in natural light. About the Chill Project Series: The Chill Project a series of works in cast glass translating textures of ice and rock into a vision of cold, inspired by a warming planet. The resulting sculpture shows layered time from the quotidian rotation of the earth to deep geologic layering and formation of our planet. David's interest in natural forms was uniquely inspired by my Antarctic Artists and Writers Program grant in 2006, where he began to use geologic textures to explore environmental light within his sculptures. Two pieces of personal evolution happened in the process. One was that he discovered how different glass and ice are in just about every way, in optics, workability, color and feel. The later revelation was how much the geology in cast glass combined with sunlight showed layers of time: the daily and yearly rotation of the earth and in the making of the glass. This ongoing effort can examine the swirl of forces that shape our lives as seen through geology and light. About David Ruth David Ruth is an Oakland, California based glass sculptor that has been making large-scale cast glass sculptures and architectural features for over 30 years. Often featuring bright colors and contrasting polished surfaces with rough textures, the work has been featured in architecture, museums, and in galleries around the world. Over the years he has taught various workshops and classes in glass techniques and is considered an innovator in glass casting.

Abstract Cast Glass Sculpture, 'Ras Algethi', 1995 by David Ruth
By David Ruth

'Ras Algethi' is a contemporary abstract cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from his Internal Space series. This part of the series was inspired by astronomy and the distant galaxies and stars. David fused various colored glass creates a layered, suspended, and vibrant three-dimensional space within an spiral form. About the Internal Space Series: David’s experiments with sheet glass and fusing led him to try to make the glass thicker to see more interior space. It was during this time a professor pointed out that he was working with a metaphor, for which the internal space of the glass was the equivalent to the internal life of the mind. This became his operating mantra but also forced him to come to terms with the casting of thick sections. “Creating those internal spaces came with some problems. Other than telescope mirrors, I did not know that anyone annealed glass in a kiln for more than a day or two. When pieces cracked after five...
