About the Item
'Wragg' is a contemporary cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from the Chill Project Series. Made from soda glass, the piece is initially derived from textures taken off ice and rock at Palmer Station, Antarctica and Claremont Canyon roadcut in Oakland, California. These textures were combined, molded, then cast in glass to create the form. The back of the piece is finely polished to contrast the front, while still allowing the texture to be seen from both sides. The combination of the geology and glass show the close connection to time and the evolution of our planet. This piece in particular has a brutalist quality as the bottom of the form subtle texture differs the rigidness of the chert formation that is present at the top.
About the Chill Project Series:
The Chill Project a series of works in cast glass translating textures of ice and rock into a vision of cold, inspired by a warming planet. The resulting sculpture shows layered time from the quotidian rotation of the earth to deep geologic layering and formation of our planet. David's interest in natural forms was uniquely inspired by my Antarctic Artists and Writers Program grant in 2006, where he began to use geologic textures to explore environmental light within his sculptures. Two pieces of personal evolution happened in the process. One was that he discovered how different glass and ice are in just about every way, in optics, workability, color and feel. The later revelation was how much the geology in cast glass combined with sunlight showed layers of time: the daily and yearly rotation of the earth and in the making of the glass. This ongoing effort can examine the swirl of forces that shape our lives as seen through geology and light.

David Ruth is an Oakland, California based glass sculptor that has been making large-scale cast glass sculptures and architectural features for over 30 years. Often featuring bright colors and contrasting polished surfaces with rough textures, the work has been featured in architecture, museums, and in galleries around the world. He holds degrees in History from University of California at Santa Cruz and glass from California College of the Arts. Over the years he has taught various workshops and classes in glass techniques and is considered an innovator in glass casting.
