About the Item

eyelets, fabric, thread on wood Denise Yaghmourian’s material based sensibility results in works that reference Feminism, Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, the Pattern and Decoration movement, as well as contemporary concerns about art making. Originally a painter, Yaghmourian discovered new materials for an experimental body of work by scavenging through fabric stores, thrift shops, and toy stores. Since then she has used objects associated with mass production and consumption, transforming the mundane into formal studies of shape, color, and pattern. Through her work she embraces the obvious and accepts the ubiquitous manufactured nature of today’s society. Yaghmourian creates works that are sophisticated, detailed, meditative, and elegant in their process and end result, but powerful in their tension between material and content.
