About the Item

Dionisios Fragias is a New York -based artist born on the Greek island of Kefalonia and raised in New York City. He is the protege of the artist Jeff Koons whose years-long mentorship, working very closely together, has instilled in the artist a sensitive approach to his art practice. Through his own works, Fragias examines human nature’s tendencies towards creation and destruction. His free-standing sculptures, “hybrid” paintings/wall-sculptures and other diverse-media works connect our past to the present. In his latest series, Emergency Inspiration, the artist expands on certain questions that are at the core of art-making: How do artists respond in times of uncertainty? How can we gain a better personal understanding of a crises old and new, real or fabricated throughout daily practices? Several of the new works come together in the current exhibition titled, The Landscape I Can’t Unsee, the artworks mine a mixture of imagery that is taken from historical archives and contemporary digital databases. Memes and familiar iconographies are re-drawn and stylized in a collective manner that invite’s one to contemplate certain prescient issues that we constantly face. Fragias has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Greece, Switzerland, Belgium, etc. His artworks have been collected by major institutions including the Hearst collection in New York. His largest sculpture, Icarus Empires is permanently exhibited in the main lobby of the Hearst Tower.
