About the Item
Cubist Nude
Patinated Bronze Sculpture.
Dominique Polles' bronze sculptures of female nude edition 2/4 patinated bronze signed and dated 1999. Born in Paris in 1945, young Pollès often watched and admired his father as he painted with great sensitivity with his preferred medium of oil paints.
In 1966 his fascination for painting led him to participate as a painter in an art exhibition at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and subsequently left medical school. During his stay in London in 1967, a chance meeting with the Italian sculptor Enzo Plazzotta sealed his fate as Dominique was tutored the basics of sculpture by the master.
In 1970 he decided to leave for Italy, settling in Carrara, Tuscany. Within three years his sculptures began to be appreciated and then sold especially by American collectors. The more sculptures he made the larger and more ambitious his work had become. His sculptures bestow a startling sense of volume, contour, and texture suggesting massive, primitive icons rather than contemporary works. The lure of the polished patinas varies from the traditional browns and greens to bright turquoise, rich reds, and cool silver. His subject matter is almost always of the female form with twisting, truncated torsos, emphasizing the curving, sensuous planes of the womanly outline.
Considered as the inventor of the “Organic Cubism”, he is immediately identifiable while he is reinventing the interpretation of the fullness of flesh through new and personal mythology. His creations are a blend of Brancusi's purity, Henry Moore's figurative abstraction, and Modigliani's lines and forms.
In 1980 he was awarded the Pascal Bigel by the Rodin Museum in Paris and seven years later the work ‘Great Ogive’ was purchased by the city of Paris to be installed at the Museum Campredon. In 1997 he received the award of the Florence Gould Foundation in an exhibition organized by the Prince Pierre Foundation of Monaco. He has exhibited in France, Belgium, Florida (USA), Italy, and the UK.
Pollès is a French sculptor born in Paris in 1945. He is considered the inventor of “Organic Cubism” . Fascinated by anatomy, he studied medicine and also attended drawing classes at the Academy Charpentier. In 1966, he discovered sculpture from a friend, the sculptor Enzo Plazota. He affirmed: “Overnight, as soon as I discovered form, I felt that I could give up everything for it.” In 1970, he went to Carrara and has lived ever since in Pietrasanta. A few years later, he created his own foundry and almost exclusively uses bronze for his works. His creations represent a continuity to the tradition of Greek sculpture. They could be considered as a short-circuit between Brancusi's purity, Henry Moore's figurative abstraction, and Modigliani's lines and forms. His love for the female figure, for her sensuality, complexity, and shape, led him to explore mainly the female form. Since the beginning of his career, Pollès has created a singularly stylized cubistish form, which became his signature.

This large sculpture 76" almost two meters tall 196cm.
Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world.
Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculptures by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze.
His work explores styles that are both abstract and figurative and the grace and spirit inherent in his work endow his bronzes with a transcendent vitality. The international acceptance of Salmones sculpture...

BIOGRAPHY
Pollès was born in Paris in 1945
Like Leonard de Vinci in an anatomical search of perfection, of representation of movement, with an almost scientifical or medical glance, Pollès holds the utmost passion of anatomy: he learns about the human body, the complicated hank of muscles, movements of members and all the bodily mechanics. That’s why in 1964 he starts medicine school and along side goes to the Charpentier Academy where he follows art lessons.
In 1966, he encountered sculpture in London where he was invited by his friend Enzo Plazota.
This final step teaching him all the bases of sculpture.
Pollès then decides to go to live in Italy, in Carrare, an important art place. He moved in 1970 and settled in Pietrasanta where he still lives.
His sculptures, by creating a vision of the moving being, polished and smoothed, break the pureness of aestheticism. He just knows one theme, one model: the female form.
According to Pollès, this is the most beautiful one, the most harmonious one.
“When we are looking at a feminine body, it is splendid, it is musical”.
His love of women, the sensuality, the complexity, the shapes and passions, brought him to explore the female form. Since the beginning he has created a singularly stylized cubist form; this becoming his signature form.
All are cast in bronze by Pollès himself and made in a series of four with one artist's proof. His masterliness of the patina is considered unparalleled. The world's recognition of his craft is evidenced by the many awards he has won, the unique places he has shown and the prestigious private collections he is in, including that of Princess Caroline of Monaco.
Pollès was recently honored in an exhibition outside Paris, sponsored by the French Government, called “Sculptors From Rodin to The Present”. He was one of the few living sculptors to be so honored; the others include Abakanowicz, Arman, Saint-Phalle & Wesselmann.
Maurice Rheims, a respected Art Critic, and a member of The French Academy, has said “I consider Pollès to be one of the outstanding sculptors of our time.”
His show in the Bagatelle Gardens in Paris in 1998 was a major honor as he was one of only two artists who have ever been allowed to present their work in the Bagatelle. The other artist is Henry Moore.
