About the Item

This striking abstract painted metal sculpture by Edward (Eduardo) Arcenio Chavez (1917–1995) is a vibrant example of mid-century modern design. Rendered in bold black and the three primary colors—red, blue, and yellow, the piece exudes energy and movement, showcasing Chavez’s mastery of abstract expressionism and dynamic form. Measuring 16 ½ x 7 x 11 inches, it is a powerful tabletop sculpture that brings a sophisticated, colorful focal point to any interior space. About the Artist: Eduardo Chavez (1917–1995), a prominent American modernist, was a multifaceted artist celebrated for his work as an illustrator, muralist, painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Born in Wagonmound, New Mexico, Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under notable mentors including Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Arnold Blanch, and Peppino Mangravite. Before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Chavez painted murals across the Western United States, capturing the region’s landscapes and cultural heritage. Post-war, he settled in Woodstock, New York, joining a vibrant artistic community that included Bruce Currie, Fletcher Martin, and his wife, artist Jenne Magafan. His 1940s–50s work is celebrated for modern interpretations of Western themes, combining bold color, abstraction, and dynamic compositions. Chavez received numerous accolades, including the Tiffany Grant (1948), Fulbright Award (1951), and Childe Hassam Award (1953), and he taught at the Art Students League, Syracuse University, and Colorado College. His work was widely exhibited at institutions such as MoMA, PAFA, Los Angeles MA, and the Corcoran Gallery, and is included in prestigious collections including the Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, Detroit Museum of Art, and Butler Institute of American Art. This sculpture is an exceptional example of mid-20th-century American modernism, combining vibrant color, abstract form, and historic artistic significance in a single striking work.
