This majestic statue from Hany Gabriel is a perfect example, “Lady of the Palace” fashioned in soothing white marble is this young artist’s take on the general subject of female authority and prominence, a theme preciously explored by some of the greats of modern Egyptian art like Kamal Khalifa’s “Queen of the Nile” bust and others. Gabriel uses white as a symbol of purity and fashions in her image almost as though she were a natural outcropping of the stone itself, smooth yet impenetrable, which are indirectly suggested as being two opposing yet innate qualities of powerful women.
