About the Item
Becoming is a contemporary abstract sculpture, hand-carved from Italian Carrara marble. British sculptor Ian Thomson possesses the skill and expertise required for this slow and painstaking work, for which he holds great passion, forethought and vision inspired by his travels & philosophical thinking.
Describing his influences, Thomson holds in high esteem, Greek and Egyptian sculpture, together with names such as Michelangelo, Rodin, Degas, Manzu and Maillol. His influences also come from closer to home, namely his mother, an artist who exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Thomson works on raw marble blocks, after planning his vision to the last detail on a clay maquette.

In a statement regarding this artwork, Thomson writes:
Despite Heraclitus being described as “the weeping philosopher”, I couldn’t help but latch onto what seemed to me to be the optimistic side of his philosophy. It struck me that unless we are perfect humans, permanent stasis cannot be a desirable condition. Furthermore, if change is both unavoidable and rest-promoting, then we should welcome it as the vehicle by which we become better, more peaceful and wiser individuals. A drastic change, a transformation for the better, is what so many people desire.
These are the kind of things I was thinking when I made my sculpture “Becoming”.’
