James Perkins
"The Weight of My Appearance (White)", Abstract Conceptual Sculpture

2016

$20,000

About

This white and marble minimal sculpture titled "The Weight of My Appearance (White)" is an original artwork by James Perkins made of linen, marble, and aluminum. This piece measures 110”h x 23”w x 8”d. While I typically like to think I am making and considering work in a way that does not confine me to the limiting box of my identity that the contemporary art world often holds people of color to, in 2016, I embarked on a small series of works that I thought was just my ordinary unburdened inquiry of material, lack of subject etc. You know, similar to Judd, Stella, Turrell, Heizer et al. I had hired an architect to help me through the cad designs and think through the physics of cantilevering. Studied textiles with tailors. Sought out an incredible quarry to source and hand- carve the “marble feet” as I called them. After the pieces were delivered and assembled in my studio over the course of a year, I was shocked at what stood before me. The title immediately came to my head as a response. “The Weight of My Appearance”. I had made a body of work prior about abstracting identity, but had eschewed what was fast becoming a trend for something higher, quite literally. Something above this planet’s experienc- es, leading to “Event Horizons”. Our work is who we are. It’s impossible to lie or hide, even if you try. It would be apparent to a trained eye. The Weight of My Appearance would not only foreshadow what was to come in our society, but also formally for my work. I literally began to bury work after this experience. I became even more obsessed with the sky, the stars, space, the warmth of the sun. It is a battle, but I fight to retain, find, and replenish our born lightness daily. If we encounter racism, ignorance, ugly, it is the greatest motivation to seek beauty. Miles Davis served as a great example for this strategy. We must do what we can to protect others, but let us also remember to protect ourselves, our hearts, our thoughts, our moods, our perspective, our children, which will inevitably protect our society. James Perkins (b. 1978) received a BA from Yale University and a Masters from the School of Visual Arts. The artist lives and works in New York City and Fire Island, New York. He has exhibited work with Metro Pictures, NYU The Institute of Fine Arts, Ace Gallery Beverly Hills, MANA Contemporary, CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, Dallas Contemporary, MTV RE: DEFINE and the School of Visual Arts.
