Janine Sopp
Ocean

2020

About the Item

Artist Commentary: Drawing and stamping on clay allows for immediate and spontaneous expression. This piece was inspired by the fluidity and bounty of the ocean. The ocean, a source of nourishment for body and soul. I spent time in Sicily, eating freshly caught seafood daily and combing the beach for treasures. Colorful sea glass, smooth tumbled stones, and exquisite bits of hand-painted tile from the ruins long ago were the jewels that I found. Years later, I found myself on the shores of Morocco gathering similar treasures. I have always felt at home on the ocean, in the ocean, and that has inspired many of my ceramic pieces. This piece, from Time & Space, brings the ocean to you. Fluid lines and textures, sand and sea hues, bits of bright color ebb and flow. Keywords: ceramic, wall sculpture, abstract, colorful, installation Artist Biography: As a former fashion & textile designer, Janine's ceramic pieces are a natural extension of her first career in the clothing industry. Having traveled across Europe and Morocco in her late 20's, Janine reinvented her artistic self by discovering her passion as a ceramicist and shifted gears to the career she continues to define in the medium of clay. She brings together her passion for color, texture, and form in her unique pieces which primarily focus on works for the wall, installations, and commissions. Her free-form drawings on clay, from the Time & Space collection, can be found in corporate settings, hospitals, and private collections across the country. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and can be created to fit in any setting. All her work tends to be in multiples that utilize the space in a vast and creative way. Janine loves to bring glass into her clay work to add bits of color and contrast, and she is always expanding on her work with new and innovative ideas.

All That Remains, Abstract Sculpture (Ceramic and Steel), 2020
By Fred Klingelhofer

Artist Commentary: I constructed this piece from the setters I used to fire the ceramic pieces of another sculpture along with some of the glaze test tiles. When I saw these "scraps" sitting together there was a visual harmony that suggested a new use for them.
