Minimalist, abstract geometric wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal We Were Never Strangers, made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 30 x 19 x 3.5 inches, oxidized stainless steel Hangs on a French cleat Lightweight, weighs about 5 lbs. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious. This abstract sculpture by Joe Sorge is made with steel and black dye. A single strip of steel curves up from a circular base like a ribbon, curling at the top twice around. The sculpture casts intricate and unique shadows on its surrounding environment. The white pedestal pictured is not included. Connecticut-based sculptor Joe Sorge studied at the School of Visual Art (SVA) in New York City. While Joe's body of work is most often made with stainless steel which he sometimes dyes to give the forms bold, solid colors, he also experiments with stone carving, genesa crystals, tiger eye alabaster and others. He works with a variety of colors, finishes, and textures, to create the final piece. Joe's sculptures express the fluidity and tension inherent in the material he uses.
