Minimalist, abstract three dimensional wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal “DNA” made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 19 x 12 x 3.5 inches, oxidized steel Hangs of a French cleat, sculpture is lightweight (weighs about 5 lbs.) Signed, verso Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking. Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious. This mid-sized abstract contemporary sculpture by Joe Sorge is made with steel, orange dye, and wax. The warm-toned piece features a strip of steel metal that twists and turns in a flowing, spiraling movement. It casts unique shadows on its surroundings, which change in altering light. Please note that the white pedestal base pictured in the image gallery is not included. Connecticut-based sculptor Joe Sorge studied at the School of Visual Art (SVA) in New York City. While Joe's body of work is most often made with stainless steel which he sometimes dyes to give the forms bold, solid colors, he also experiments with stone carving, genesa crystals, tiger eye alabaster and others. He works with a variety of colors, finishes, and textures, to create the final piece. Joe's sculptures express the fluidity and tension inherent in the material he uses.
