About the Item

“It took two years of tireless experimentation for me to develop the process of casting paper into bronze, another seven years to perfect, and it continues to evolve today.” - Kevin Box Santa Fe-based artist, Kevin Box, pushes the boundaries of traditional metal casting by creating sculptures that are so delicate, detailed, and weightless, that they appear to be made simply of paper. After studying the graphic arts in New York, Box’s practice transformed during a trip to Greece when he decided to transition from graphic art to metal casting – a medium that will withstand the centuries and provide inspiration for generations to come. His exploration of working with metal lead him to study at foundries in Texas for three years, a move that afforded him the freedom of experimentation to grow his skills and eventually open his own studio. After acquiring a treasure trove of paper found in the warehouse of an old print shop near to the foundry he rented, Box decided to test mixing the two mediums by casting paper in metal. The unique combination of the delicacy of paper with the fortitude of metal creates whimsical, fun, and beautiful pieces with surprising weight, both literally and figuratively. Box further engages with his viewers by inviting them to touch and interact with the artworks, believing that collaborating the tactile and visual experiences allows his audience to fully connect with the artworks and explore their untold stories. Today, Box’s monumental sculptures can be found around the United States including the Austin City Symphony, TX and the Four Seasons Hotel, Washington D.C., and internationally including Australia, Morocco, and Japan.

Almost a Symphony
By Sherry Owens
Located in New Orleans, LA
Sherry Owens Almost a Symphony, 2019 Bronze, patina, brass nails, paint 16 5/8 x 12 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches For over 30 years, sculptor Sherry Owens has used the sinewy crepe myrtle tree to tell her story of the Texas landscape, death, renewal, beauty, and of today’s growing environmental concerns. Remnants of personal stories, visions and observations in nature are the driving forces in her work. She believes that what we see and do in our daily lives leaves a mark on our planet. It is the direct impact of human activities on the natural world, which is visualized in her artistic practice. She creates connections with nature using crepe myrtle trees found along the side of the road. Each stick is hand-carved and cut to fit, then laid in place and secured with a small myrtle peg. What takes precedence in the laborious process is the importance of detail and evidence of the artist’s hand and her interaction with the materials. Sherry Owens is a native Texan, currently living and working in Dallas, TX. She received a BFA from Southern Methodist University. Recent Texas solo exhibitions include The Grace Museum; Cris Worley Fine Arts; Martin Museum of Art; Art Museum of Southeast Texas; and a two-person site-specific installation at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum. She was also included in recent exhibitions at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, TX and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LA. She has exhibited internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Peru, and Turkey. Her work is currently on view in the Ground Zero 360 Remembrance Exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art...
