Kevin Snipes
"Naked Truth", Abstract Porcelain Sculpture, Surface Illustration, Underglaze

2018

About the Item

Kevin Snipes creates ceramic vessel forms that act as canvases for self referential narratives that are brought to the viewer through a combination of illustration and symbolism, obscure glyphs, and comical/whimsical motifs. Within the discipline of ceramics, his talent is unquestionable, utilizing abstract and challenging shapes, as well as a vast array of underglazes and oxide wash techniques to bring his illustrations to life. Kevin Snipes is an American visual artist born in Philadelphia and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He is currently Visiting Scholar/Researcher at the University of Georgia Department of Art in Athens, GA. He received a B.F.A. in ceramics and drawing from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 and completed graduate studies at the University of Florida in 2003. Snipes’ artwork explores concepts of otherness. He employs techniques of figurative narration and craft to form objects that cross the boundary between sculpture and painting. His work is a combination of atypical pottery forms, quirky figurative drawings and contemporary vernacular language. His pieces are influenced by an array of traditional and nontraditional art forms, including street art, architecture, contemporary painting, the avid love of art history and even children’s toys and drawings. His work has an underlying sophistication, which is based in existentialist thought, creating a dynamic body of work that is both culturally transcendent and personally identifiable. Through his use of multi-faceted narratives Snipes challenges the viewer to consider the concept of otherness in confrontation with the self. Throughout his adult life, Snipes has maintained a nomadic existence, allowing a sense of place to augment his work. “If subliminal means that which is below the threshold of ordinary consciousness and perception, then the liminal is the point of emergence, the threshold itself, the turning point between one realm and another. The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. Liminality is a period of transition, during which usual boundaries of thought, self-understanding, and behavior shift, opening the way to something new. In my work, with what I call liminal objects, I ask the question: When does an ordinary object move into other dimensions?...At the threshold, is form, pure energy, a radiance of color and light, a wave, a glimmer, simply a shimmer of becoming...The mediums that I choose are mutable and plastic and lend themselves naturally to the metaphor and exploration of emergence, becoming, and liminality.” - Artist Statement James Marshall has been a highly successful exhibiting artist, designer and art educator whose education in the ceramic arts began with a pottery apprenticeship in Guatemala while living with the Quiche, a Mayan Native American tribe during his service in the Peace Corps...
