- "Black 401", Minimalist Ceramic Sculpture, Liminal Form, Matte Glaze SurfaceBy James MarshallLocated in St. Louis, MO“If subliminal means that which is below the threshold of ordinary consciousness and perception, then the liminal is the point of emergence, the threshold itself, the turning point between one realm and another. The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. Liminality is a period of transition, during which usual boundaries of thought, self-understanding, and behavior shift, opening the way to something new. In my work, with what I call liminal objects, I ask the question: When does an ordinary object move into other dimensions?...At the threshold, is form, pure energy, a radiance of color and light, a wave, a glimmer, simply a shimmer of becoming...The mediums that I choose are mutable and plastic and lend themselves naturally to the metaphor and exploration of emergence, becoming, and liminality.” - Artist Statement James Marshall has been a highly successful exhibiting artist, designer and art educator whose education in the ceramic arts began with a pottery apprenticeship in Guatemala while living with the Quiche, a Mayan Native American tribe during his service in the Peace Corps...Category

- Contemporary, Geometric, Ceramic, Vessel, Sculpture, Stoneware, Glaze, DesignBy Judith ErnstLocated in St. Louis, MOOriginally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways. Outcroppings 02, Repeating Geometric Ceramic Vessel...Category
