Artist Lauren Skelly Bailey invites viewers to discover a world of sweet, visceral indulgences rendered in glistening fluxes and frothy color fields.
Skelly Bailey’s innovative approach blends hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramic techniques to craft armatures that undergo multiple glaze firings. The result is an array of organic, gestural forms where glazes cascade, craze, and pool across the surfaces. Each piece embodies a dance of thought and emotion expressed through vibrant tones and textures, capturing the essence of nature and abstraction.
Drawing on a foundation of coiling, pinching, and painting alongside thrown clay forms, Skelly Bailey seamlessly integrates sculptural vessels and coral-like structures. Her practice celebrates the unexpected outcomes from the kiln and the layering of hand-painted surfaces, transforming them into intentional layers of beauty and complexity.
Lauren Skelly Bailey received her MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MA and BFA in Studio Art from Adelphi University, NY. She has apprenticed internationally and has exhibited nationally at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; the Painting Center, New York, Cape Cod Museum of Art, MA, Rhode Island School of Design, Adelphi University, NY, Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, NY, Caumsett Foundation, Lloyd Harbor, NY, Providence Art Club Gallery, Rhode Island, University of Southern Mississippi, and the Patchogue Art Council Gallery, NY. She currently resides and teaches in Long Island, NY.
