Louise Nevelson
American Book Award

1980

About the Item

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. There has been a tremendous renewal of interest and appreciation for Nevelson’s work in recent years. In 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson’s signature wall sculptures. More recently, Nevelson's work was the subject of a solo exhibition "Persistence" at the 2022 Venice Biennale, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the artist's presentation at the 1962 American Pavilion of the Venice Biennale. Nevelson is renowned and recognized internationally for her elaborate black sculptures. However throughout the artist's life she experimented with printmaking and editioned sculpture. This rare edition in wood is anchored by a large triangle, in the center of the work. Her signature monochromatic, matte black surface is composed of her unique geometric abstractions, alluding to African art and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture. It is emblematic of Nevelson’s artistic vision and groundbreaking aesthetic. Today, Louise Nevelson’s work can be found in major museum collections around the world. An increasing number of public collections are reinstalling her works in their displays from their permanent collections including the Whitney in New York City, which has the largest holding of her oeuvre internationally.
