Sorel Etrog
Antigone

1963

About the Item

Sorel Etrog (1933 - 2014) is arguably Canada's most famous sculptor. Etrog's work is defined by existential themes surrounding the human experience. Exploring paradoxical concepts such as the innate yearning for connection and the inevitability of separation, Etrog investigates human and aesthetic topics from an intrinsically poetic lens. "Antigone" is a paradigm of Etrog's practice from his breakout decade. Mysterious and sensual, Etrog's form synthesizes a myriad of influences; tribal art, religious statuary, and the rising force of Modernism. Perhaps most importantly is the tension between representation and abstraction. This work features two inextricable figures, perhaps Antigone and her loyal fiancee Haemon, their elongated silhouettes gracefully intertwined in a tender union. The smooth, symmetrical forms are affixed at the head, serving as an early example of Etrog's renowned "bolt" motif. While executed in bronze, "Antigone" possesses a remarkable weightless presence. It's incredible, towering figure seemingly lifts off the ground, as if taking flight. The sculpture was created shortly before Etrog closed his studio in New York City and committed to developing his practice in Toronto. This was an incredibly fruitful period: within five years, Etrog had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Milan, Berlin, and Rome. In 2013, Etrog was the subject of a major retrospective organized and hosted by the Art Gallery of Ontario. The artist was elected a member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and two years later became a Chevalier of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. His work is celebrated internationally and can be found in numerous museum and private collections around the world including the Tate, the AGO, and LACMA. Questions about this piece? Contact us.
