About the Item
Lukas Ulmi’s work unveils the hidden beauty of shapes taking stones, seemingly static forms, incomplete or meaningless objects and turning them into authentic sculptures where weightlessness, movement and poetry unite in delicate iron compositions that subvert ideas of harmony, balance and space. His works have strong connections to the earth, creating circles and lines representing a symbolic return to primary contact, such as planets in constant motion or the harmonic flow of energy in nature.
Ulmi’s works from the last decade in particular seem to invite the spectator to a meditative contemplation. With Mandala, Om and Kailash, Ulmi merges in a natural way the opposing ideas of fullness and emptiness, everlasting and ephemeral. The concept of Maya (the Magical Illusion) in Buddhism has inspired his latest series: according to its definition, everything and nothing exists. His last series of sculptures Maya take inspiration from this idea, playing with illusion, false perception, presence and absence.
Since 1998, Lukas Ulmi’s monumental sculptures and fountains have been displayed in numerous squares in Spain and Switzerland. His work has been acquired by important public institutions such as the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

Lukas Ulmi
This Swiss artist lives and works in Valencia, where through his sculptures he skilfully explores and merges various concepts. Illusion, false perception, presence and absence, where everything and nothing exists. Ulmi’s work unveils the hidden beauty of shapes, stones, seemingly static forms, incomplete or meaningless objects that are often found washed up on Valencia’s beaches. These recycled items are turned into authentic sculptures where weightlessness, movement and poetry unite in delicate iron compositions that subvert ideas of harmony, balance and space. His works have strong connections to the earth, creating circles and lines representing a symbolic return to primary contact, such as planets in constant motion or the harmonious flow of energy in nature.Since 1998, Ulmi’s monumental sculptures and fountains have been displayed in numerous squares in Spain and Switzerland. His work has been shown across the world and acquired by important public institutions such as the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

Perry Haas is a ceramic artist making functional pottery and focusing on wood-firing techniques. Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms.
“I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. These functional pots are developed as a place for this surface to exist and to be enjoyed as a part of our daily life.”—Haas
