About the Item

Luke Djalagarrarra is a sculptor and painter who works from Ngukurr Arts in the Roper River region of the Northern Territory, Australia. Djalagarrarra’s work is influenced by a family lineage of artistic practices: his father and uncles were sculptors, carvers and painters on Goulburn and Elcho Islands off the coast of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Djalagarrarra began painting when he was 17, and more recently started carving sculptures of local animals and birds, and reproductions of objects with ceremonial function. Similar to other art centres which support the work of Indigenous contemporary artists in the remote communities of Australia, Ngukurr, where Djalagarrarra works, grew out of a Christian mission settlement, the Roper River Mission (1908-1968). While the Mission provided an alternative to the violence of the colonial frontier, it also contributed to the displacement of Aboriginal people from their ancestral homelands and the dampening of traditional cultures, values and languages. Ngukurr is home to approximately 800 people from nine different language groups (Judith Ryan, 2007). In part due to the community’s cultural diversity, art made in Ngukurr is considered to be particularly experimental and culturally hybrid. Artists’ work is often representational, uses neon, metallic or luminescent pigments and industrial materials, and – in the case of Djalagarrarra – incorporates ceremonial clan designs as both symbolic and aesthetic devices.

Unafraid to explore uncomfortable territories, the artist mines from a range of sources to create hybrid creatures that are often symbolic of man’s psychological condition in an angst-ridden zeitgeist. In exploring issues of identity and violence, Bhatt’s research led her to the beginnings of mankind. Most ancient creation...
