medium: aluminum; Maggi’s first experiments into the nature of three-dimensional drawing were with aluminum foil. A signature work from Maggi, this piece consists of a thin sheet of aluminum upon which he has drawn tiny, abstract lines with a stylus. His precise figures seem to elicit interpretation, while simultaneously eluding it. Having studied print-making, Maggi has created a work somewhat reminiscent of an etching plate; a humorous nod to the fact that because of the nature of the materials used, if anyone tried to make a print from this “plate” they would destroy the piece and its message. A former writer and journalist, Maggi plays with the concept of language—both in the linear lexicon of his pieces and in their titles. Though his abstract vocabulary remains indecipherable, his witty and intriguing titles are often more revealing. In PreColumbian and PostClintonian, the title expresses the dichotomies at work in this piece. The diminutive iconography is evocative of a Pre-Columbian language, almost Aztec-like with its curves and triangulations. Yet at the same time, it also recalls overhead, satellite images of bustling modern metropolises or close-up views of sophisticated microchips—images of the modern era. Are we looking at something ancient, or something modern? Something from a great distance, or a magnification of minutiae? The ambiguity inherent in the work is part of what makes it so powerful and engaging. Maggi’s iconography is architectural, linguistic, and enigmatic—satellite views of cities and crystalline structures, magnifications of tiny elements, microelectronics, computer chips, primordial hieroglyphs, and abstract alphabets. Executed on a scale that, to really see, requires time and close inspection, Maggi’s work is both an illustration of, and an antidote to, the incomprehensible excess of information transmitted through ever more intricate and rapid networks and technologies.
