This one of a kind leather leather sculpture with a hand cut mirror on a brass base employs several techniques including: hot gilding, copper wire embroidery, scarification, piercing and hot drawing, with gilded metal accessories. It is truly a sculpture in the round. This artwork straddles on the functional with a mirror that is large enough to reflect one's face.
Marie Barthès is a Paris-based artist who specializes in leather sculptures. Her sculptures are hybrids of art and function with their characteristic mirrored elements, intricate copper wire embroidery, and skillful leatherwork. Barthès finds inspiration in the tactile beauty of leather and its potential to be both smooth and rough. She employs a variety of techniques such as hot gilding, carving, sewing, and embossing to highlight this material juxtaposition.
Barthès’ world is inspired by reality, contemplation, and observation. She interprets rhythms from nature, represents order and disorder, draws creativity from particles and cells so that each parcel of life is reflected in her works.
