"White Wedding Tears, " Porcelain and Ink signed by Marjorie Mau

1983

About the Item

"White Wedding Tears" is an original porcelain and ink piece by Marjorie Mau. The artist signed the sculpture. 16" x 14" x 3" art Artist's Statement: "My works are about the act of painting and drawing, how the material moves and layers, is added to and subtracted from. While this process may seem enough, it is through the working of surfaces and transformation of symbols the images find their clarity. In the removal of paint, in unpainting, it is unexpected for there to be more; but I have come to know presence in this absence. Underlays of paint have all the windswept and scraped landscape features of the windrowed fields of the Midwest. Ever present horizontals countered with verticals are made real through linear overlays. Long interested in land as place and as a reservoir of form, aerial flights over midsections of the country provide microcosms of line, shape and space from what was expansive. Working alternately between painting and drawing leads to series of works, mindful that my next work is almost always generated from the last. It is here that my desire to paint as I draw reverses itself; and I unsuspectingly draw as I paint, moving the materials of drawing as I do paint, the same commitment to line, surface and edge holding true. That I have adopted vessel forms of enclosure and containment from the map of aerials and have extracted fluted ceramic vessels into painted surfaces, speaks to the connection I have with these glazed vestiges. A rhythm moves through my studio as I work, repetition of line and form taking on the same pattern of breathing. What is reduced in the practice of making leaves room for that eloquent mystery of stillness. What remains is revealed in a porous yet orderly balance."

  • 'The Calendar Wheel' assemblage in drawer with spheres clock shells cards
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Calendar Wheel' is an original assemblage by the American artist Charles Berg. Within a divided drawer, Berg has assembled a variety of found objects: metal balls, a clock, a sheet of copper punched with the word 'wind,' a Victorian card of a woman, etc. The artwork takes its name, however, from a transparent 1935 calendar in the lower right. Berg here is following the tradition other artists who specialize in assemblage, including Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauchenberg, and Betye Saar...

  • Medusa, outsider artist etches copper, paint, cut diamonds, ink, aluminum frame
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
MEDUSA by Rocky Dobey is a hand-inscribed copper sheet with cut diamonds, blue machinist ink and fired porcelain paint. It measures 36 x 48", and framed in aluminum it measures 37 x 49”. It features some of the artist’s notable motifs – a monstrous brick wall with crenelated and flaming towers, inlaid with sparkles of diamond and glass, sword-like flames. New for the artist are the twisting, turning bodies of which there are at least eight. The deep blue background of machinist ink coating the copper provides a momentous, mythological night sky. For over 40 years, outsider artist Rocky Dobey has been producing intaglio prints, etched metal plaques, engraved copper sheets and site-specific public sculptures. Working anonymously for the first two decades, his work has drawn attention to social and political issues like prison and justice reform, neighborhood gentrification, globalization, indigenous sovereignty, drug rehabilitation and homelessness. With striking imagery of demonic towers toppled in flames, horrific machines and cryptic symbols of oppression, Rocky's work soon became a recognized and sought-after stamp of organized resistance. Several of his prints are held in collections, particularly the “Carnival Against Capitalism” poster he produced for the 2001 Quebec City protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Rocky’s poster...
