About the Item
Sezione Aurea-C2 is a unique monumental sculpture by contemporary artist Mattia Bosco. This sculpture is made of Cave Michelangelo statuary marble and 23.8-carat gold leaf, dimensions are 232 × 86 × 69 cm (91.3 × 33.9 × 27.2 in).
The sculpture comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This piece belongs to a set of three sculptures created especially for the White Carrara festival in 2023.
The artist uses gold leaf to emphasise particular shapes and lines in the stone. This body of work, titled "Sezione aurea" (Latin for "Golden section"), was inspired by the discovery of mica-containing rocks. The artist chose to use gold leaf to crystallise this presence of gold because this mineral gives the stone its sparkle. Gold is compared to light in its solid state by Mattia Bosco, who sees stone as the solid manifestation of time.
The Carrara, Tuscany, quarries provide the marble used in the Michelangelo statue cave. There has been knowledge of these quarries since antiquity. Carrara marble is highly valued due to its nearly veinless white color and fine grain. The marble used in this sculpture came from Michelangelo's caves. Almost five centuries ago, Michelangelo traveled to Carrara personally to choose the building blocks for his creations.
