About the Item

Studying the history of ceramics I have been captivated by the relationship between East and West, and how they continue to influence each other, especially through the ceramic arts. Although there might be considerable differences between the two civilizations, the cultural exchange between them is an important connector of history and has produced a long and rich exchange of ideas between artists and makers. Asian craft traditions have been handed down to the West and the handmade aspect, even within the factory setting, is still an important concept that allows for control of design and quality by the artist, which is essential within craft of the West.

“Metamorphosis” is a unique over-glaze Chinese porcelain pot by renowned ceramist and painter, Jared FitzGerald. Blowing in the wind. The wind crosses to the mountain and loops lazily in circles in the blue sky. “Metamorphosis” is part of a new series from Fitzgerald’s studios in Jingdezhen, China. This series uses over-glaze, a new ceramic firing technique that diverges from Fitzgerald’s previous ceramic practice, which used the traditional under-glaze technique with blue and white colors. Over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint with a range of colors; unlike with other glaze techniques, such as under- or middle-glaze, over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint onto an already fired ceramic panel, so there is no serious change in the color of the pigments. This is a special technique which allows the artist to mix Chinese painting techniques with western techniques derived from oil painting. Over-glaze decoration is considered one of the most important modern glaze techniques in Jingdezhen now. The traditional overglaze decorative colors in Jingdezhen include Gucai (antique colors...
